In a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio and Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo, a dozen businesses are calling for an end to plans that call for 330 rental units, 60 condominiums, and a 45,000-square-foot recreational facility at the 138,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Bedford Avenue and President Street.
The business owners believe the addition of luxury apartments to the neighborhood will further displace longterm tenants and increase issues surrounding the area’s affordability.
“Just as Crown Heights residents are concerned with gentrification and displacement, so are business owners like us,” the letter states. “Our businesses depend on local residents as customers and employees.
“If more residents of Crown Heights get pushed out of the neighborhood, our businesses will be harmed,” it continues. “In many gentrified neighborhoods across the city, we’ve seen small businesses priced out of their commercial spaces and replaced by stores that can pay much higher rents.”
Cumbo has previously dropped support of the current plan – but did not rule out any re-development of the armory – while the Economic Development Corporation and developer BFC Partners continues to move the plan through the Uniform Land Use Review Process.
