A three-alarm fire broke severely damaging a Dollar Tree and convenience store on the corner of Grand Avenue and 69th Place on Sunday afternoon just before 2 p.m.

The convenience store suffered the most damage, although no shoppers or employees in either store were injured. However, four firefighters who reported to the scene were sent to a nearby hospital. Fire officials said 33 units and 138 members reported to the scene.

“It was scary, I feel bad for the man whose store burnt down,” said Michelle Iavarone, manager of Iavarone Bros., which is located next door. “The convenience store was closed and the fire department had to cut the locks and the gate open. There was a lot of smoke, they started in the Dollar Tree to find out where it was coming from.”

The storefronts and the law office of Aiello & Cannick, which is located on the second floor, are now boarded up. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“More smoke was coming from the convenience store and the windows above it,” Iavarone added. “They finally opened up the gates to the convenience store to see that that’s where the fire was coming from.”
