The café and bar concept features two big names from the New York restaurant scene: Chef Jehangir Mehta, owner of Lower East Side’s Graffiti and Tribeca’s Mehtaphor, and Milos Zica, a master mixologist.
The sidewalk cafe will be one of the largest sidewalk cafés in Downtown Brooklyn.
In anticipation of the opening, the hotel is hosting a contest running until Tuesday, May 15. Friends and guests of the hotel’s social media networks are invited to name the bar’s signature cocktail, created by Zica. Details about the contest can be found on NU Hotel’s Facebook page.
“We are very excited for the opening of the sidewalk café and look forward to a successful inaugural summer,” said NU Hotel General Manager Javier Egipciaco. “We hope the current contest to name one of Milos Zica’s specialty cocktails will generate a competitive spirit among the local community, while spreading the word about the amazing drinks our bar has to offer.”
The name for the cocktail will be picked by Zica and announced on Friday, May 18. The winner will receive a $100 bar tab and permanent placement on the menu.
NU Hotel Brooklyn boasts an old school Brooklyn community charm, mixed with the vibe of having exquisite international cuisine, one-of-a-kind boutiques shops, world famous entertainment and being environmentally conscious.
The hotel also recently announced a partnership with House of Art Gallery, a Brooklyn-based fine art gallery which showcases a multitude of genres through many mediums.
“We are thrilled to further our support of the local art community by partnering with House of Art,“ Egipciaco said. “House of Art is an eclectic gallery whose artists shine with original and thought-provoking creations.”
The gallery will be presenting a series of events with world-renowned artist Justin Bua on Saturday, June 9, at the hotel.
The artist is best known for his best-selling collection of fine art posters. In addition to Bua’s work, the hotel will also feature works by Marcus Jansen, Frank Morison, Danny Simmons, Jamel Shabazz and others.
The newly opened sidewalk café and bar will be the location of the all-day celebration on June 9, which will begin with a children’s workshop from 2 to 4 p.m., led by Bua.
The artist will then present his work at 5 p.m., and host a book signing immediately following the discussion. Bua’s most recent book, “The Legends of Hip Hop,” was published last November by Harper Collins.
An evening reception will follow at the new bar from 6 to 9 p.m. All of the day’s events are open to the public, but RSVP is required for the evening reception. RSVPs should be sent to Rsvp_bua@nuhotelbrooklyn.com.
