This week, police officers gathered from around the country to pay homage to one of their own, Rafael Ramos, who was assassinated along with his partner Wenjian Liu, just for doing their job on Saturday, December 20, in Brooklyn.

The show of solidarity at Ramos’ funeral was unprecedented, with more than 23,000 uniformed officers joining around 15,000 civilians in mourning at the funeral service in Glendale.

But some police officers used the ceremony as a platform to air their political differences with Mayor Bill de Blasio.

We know the men and women serving in the NYPD are among the best in the world at what they do. We know that they face unique challenges that put them in danger more often than we would like.

But now more than ever, we need them to face front, regardless of circumstances. And we know that they are capable of doing so, because they do it for us day in and day out.

We know that right now, our police officers are feeling like the mayor doesn’t have their back. Indeed, this mayor has made a number of missteps along the way, but a remembrance ceremony for a fallen colleague isn't a good venue to make political statements.

To the dedicated members of the greatest police force in the world, this city needs your dedication and professionalism now more than ever so that we can all move forward together and stronger.
