We say vote for Platta.
Both candidates impressed us with their professionalism when they sat down with our editorial board, but Platta had a better grasp of the myriad issues facing the complex district, which stretches from neighborhoods like Forest Hills and Maspeth in the north all the way to the peninsula neighborhoods of the Rockaways.
Sullivan, a veteran of the armed services, was passionate about issues affecting the Rockaways, where he lives, including trying to ensure that any toll collected on the Cross Bay Bridge go directly to improving the Rockways, a novel idea we can get behind if the toll can't be eliminated entirely.
But where Platta held a distinct advantage over his opponent were his thoughts on homeless shelters, a major issue affecting neighborhoods of the 15th District like Glendale and South Ozone Park, where large-scale shelters are planned for 200 families and over 100 single men, respectively.
In fact, even if Platta loses the primary, he may still be on the ballot this November, as he worked diligently to collect over 4,000 signatures just before the deadline to create the No Homeless Shelters Party line.
The signatures are currently being challenged at the Board of Elections, but we were impressed by the ingenuity – as well as the community organizing to go door to door to gather the necessary signatures – of creating his own party line centered on such a divisive issue.
Any vote for Platta on the line, should it make it on the November ballot, sends a strong message to the mayor and this administration about the strong – and nonpartisan – opposition to the way the city is dealing with the growing homeless issue.
That's the type of creative thinking that we need from our elected officials.
In addition to smaller homeless shelters, Platta also wants to provide more support for the NYPD, where he says officers have been demoralized by the policies of the current administration.
He also wants to provide better health care and services for the senior population.
On September 13, we say vote for Slawek Platta.
