A 42-year-old men feel five stories to his death August 18, when an overloaded scaffold he was working on tipped out of balance.

According to a police report of the incident, which did not identify the victim by name, two other workers on the same scaffold hung suspended from the scaffold until emergency personnel rescued them.

The EMS who responded to the accident at around 5:30 p. m. pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The workers had been resurfacing the brick façade of 438 12th Street.

Afterwards City Council candidates running for the 39th District, which includes parts of Park Slope, called for building safety improvements to prevent future accidents.

The Department of Buildings has called for an investigation into the incident, as has

candidate Bob Zuckerman, who said “the victim was one of the thousands of hard-working New Yorkers who risk their lives every day to build our communities and keep our city running.”

Zuckerman called on the City Council to improve safety practices, especially surrounding the use of scaffolding.

Josh Skaller, an opponent of Zuckerman’s in the Democratic primary, echoed the call.

“The Department of Buildings, developers, and construction companies share the burden of ensuring that there are appropriate safety measures taken that that there is thorough training of every worker to prevent accidents,” said Skaller, who said he lives a few houses from where the accident occurred. “Construction accidents in our city are far too frequent.”
