A police spokesperson said the victim “ is doing fine” following the vicious assault.
Around 1 a.m. March 2 he was walking in the vicinity of Luquer Street and Hamilton Avenue when he was jumped by a group of five individuals shouting anti-gay slurs. After being found by police, he was treated for facial cuts and bruises at a nearby hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
In a statement police said the attackers most likely live in, or are familiar with, Carroll Gardens: “Unfortunately, we do not have a good description of the attackers to distribute at this time, but believe that the perpetrators may live in or frequent the area where the crime occurred.”
Elected officials condemned the attack. They also held a vigil near the site where it happened.
Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said “violence and bigotry have no place in our city.” Councilman Brad Lander, who represents Carroll Gardens, said, “We embrace every race, religion and sexual orientation. We will not tolerate hate and violence in Carroll Gardens or anywhere else." (Daniel Bush)
